The Big
Chookie - A Guide To Keeping (More Dead) Chickens
Frequently Asked
Questions
1. Why
are the chickens always hungry
A.
Because they are greedy
2. Will
the chickens go in at night every night
A. Yes
as soon as it gets dusky. However one or two of mine are a bit flighty and
it's always worth doing a body count when you shut them up. BE WARNED this
is actually impossible to do as some actual sit on top of each other.
However you will manage somehow I'm sure.
3. Any
possible dangers to the chickens
A.
Loads. The main problem for me is badgers at night. They break in the fence at the
back of the chicken house. They cannot get into the house though. The fence
just needs a quick check in the morning. If you have any foxes locally make
sure that you have a shotgun and licence.
4. What
happens if a chicken escapes. If you look carefully you will notice that
Foghorn Leghorn is on the wrong side of the fence.
A. My
Brown leghorn will go back on her own. My other chickens are too stupid. Either
walk up and just pick them up (sometimes works) or wait until dusk when
their sheer fright of being out in the cold dark wood will get the better of
them.
5. What
happens if a chicken dies
A. Eat
it
6. Do I
need to collect eggs more than once a day
A.
Currently we are seeing 6-7 eggs a day. It is best to go down in mid morning
and then after lunch when you feed corn. The only reason for this is that if
you leave it until after lunch then the chances of our fairy footed beasts
not breaking eggs when they settle down to lay their eggs is pretty remote.
Be warned you will get 50+ eggs a week!!!! from only 9-10 chickens.
7. What
do I do with 50+ eggs a week
A. Eat
them.
8. What
happens if a chicken is obviously ill
A.
You're the doctor, try out some of your skills.
9. Do I
need to check the fence
A. A
good idea to just have a look at once a week. Some of the chickens are
experts at tunnelling and once one gets through it's like the charge of the
light brigade.
10. Any
other tips
A. Don't
listen to them when they promise you that if you let them out for a little
walk they will go straight back in 10 minutes.
11. What
do I do with the chicken poo in their enclosure
